Akari Energy Audit
The purpose of an Akari Energy Audit is to find ways to make your home or business energy efficient which can result in significant energy savings of up to 30% or more. The most important part about what we do in an audit is to check the integrity of your home or building's envelope. Then we make corrections to reduce energy losses from improper connections and leaks and can also modify or replace some of your electrical devices or lighting fixtures that will improve energy efficiency. If necessary, we make a recommendation for any other improvements and will give you a cost estimate for various levels of energy efficiency you can achieve.
Locating Air Leaks
There can be dozens of air leaks in your home or building, so we go through a comprehensive check to make sure the building envelope is maintained. The average 2,000 square feet structure has 11 - 12 areas of concern, so the potential energy savings from this phase of the Akari Energy Audit alone can save anywhere from 5 to 30%.
Pressurization Test
In this test for leaks, we pressurize the home or building using door pressurization fans. We open the doors and attach a panel with a pressurization fan that increases the air pressure in the structure. Then we use artificial smoke generators (small hand held - safe and non-toxic) which can also show us where leaks are in the structure. We know where to apply additional sealant where smoke streams out of the structure, such as windows and other openings. Sometimes leaks are found around outlets or wall switches.
Air Handling Equipment Test
In another test for leaks, we pressurize the structure's air handling equipment and ductwork (AC Unit/Heater). We then use a smoke device to see where leaks occur. Many homes for instance, have ductwork that was either not properly sealed, or the seal has broken over time. There are usually 8 leak sources in an average home and can be several times that in larger commercial structures.
Insulation
Significant heat and/or cooling loss through the building envelope can occur due to lack of proper insulation. Your home or business may have been built to code years ago, but the insulation requirements may have improved since then and energy costs were probably much lower when the structure was originally built.
Akari Energy conducts a thorough check on your home or building's insulation and can recommend upgrades where necessary that can save you money over the long-term.
Heating and Cooling Equipment
Significant energy loss can occur due to improper installation of your heating and cooling equipment. An Akari Energy Audit helps uncover any component deficiencies and helps us make recommendations where simple and low cost improvements can be made.
If your home or building is more than 15 years old, it may be worthwhile to consider upgrading your heating and cooling system with a more modern and energy efficient model.
Lighting
Incandescent bulbs and other light sources can easily be upgraded to newer technologies such as CFL or LD lighting. Small changes like these could save you 10% or more in energy consumption.
Solar Shading
This involves an evaluation of key windows which could benefit from solar shades. Using a light meter, we can determine the windows of most concern and then make a recommendation. Manual solar shades can be as little as $75 per window on up to over a couple of hundred dollars for motorized shades that can be operated remotely.
